Climate Risk and Resilience

Using insurance to support the global climate response

The Climate Risk and Resilience team sits at the very heart of Fairmead, reflecting our commitment to ensuring that clients are fully protected and prepared for a rapidly changing climate. With a global team of more than 70 world-class experts across the UK, Europe, Asia, and North and South America, we combine deep technical knowledge with real-world delivery experience.

World-first climate risk solutions

We have a proven track record of delivering pioneering solutions. By applying out-of-the-box thinking, we have developed risk transfer products that did not previously exist—tailored to address emerging and complex climate risks faced by our clients.

Accelerating the transition to net zero with risk transfer solutions

Our combined expertise in insurance, financial markets, and climate science uniquely positions us to develop innovative risk transfer solutions that support the transition to a net zero economy. Our insurance and capital solutions help de-risk projects, reduce the cost of capital, and unlock both debt and equity financing—enabling projects to move forward faster and at scale.

Our climate risk solutions focus on four core areas:

  • Financing the energy transition

  • Adapting to increasingly volatile weather patterns

  • Securing and strengthening carbon markets

  • Protecting food systems and biodiversity

Alongside bespoke solutions for individual clients, we have developed market-making insurance products, including coverage for carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities—addressing risks such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) leakage—and innovative solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM).

Building resilience at city and ecosystem scale

Supporting urban resilience planning

The Global Risk and Resilience Fellowship (GRRF) is a joint initiative between Fairmead, the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), and the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities). The Fellowship embeds insurance expertise at the heart of urban resilience planning by bringing together city leaders and global risk experts to co-develop solutions for safer, more equitable, and more sustainable cities.

As part of this initiative, Fairmead launched a first-of-its-kind talent secondment programme, placing five insurance professionals into leadership teams across five cities for three to six months. This hands-on approach ensures resilience strategies are grounded in real-world risk and financial insight.

Sustainability in Practice

For Fairmead, sustainability is measured not only by commitments, but by action. We focus on practical initiatives that deliver real-world outcomes—protecting people, strengthening systems, and supporting long-term resilience. Our work prioritises solutions that can scale, adapt, and endure in the face of evolving global risks.

Building Climate Resilience

Climate risk is one of the defining challenges of our time. Extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and environmental degradation are increasing both the frequency and severity of losses worldwide. Fairmead actively supports solutions that help communities and organisations prepare for, withstand, and recover from climate-related shocks.

Supporting the Energy Transition

The global transition to cleaner energy systems presents both opportunity and risk. New technologies, infrastructure projects, and investment models require innovative insurance solutions to unlock capital and manage uncertainty.

Ocean and Plastic Pollution Initiatives

We collaborate with environmental organisations focused on reducing plastic pollution and restoring marine ecosystems. Our support goes beyond funding, encompassing measurement, waste reduction strategies, offset programmes, and community engagement.

By supporting river and coastal clean-up projects and sustainable waste management systems, we contribute to long-term environmental improvement while supporting local livelihoods and awareness.

Innovation in Climate and Carbon Markets

Fairmead supports the development of innovative insurance products that strengthen confidence in sustainable finance. This includes insurance solutions designed to protect participants in voluntary carbon markets against invalidation risks, helping improve transparency, credibility, and investment confidence.

Such innovations play a critical role in accelerating climate action by reducing uncertainty and encouraging responsible participation in sustainability-linked markets.

Giving Back Through Our People

Community involvement is driven by our people. Through coordinated global giving initiatives, volunteering programmes, and charitable fundraising campaigns, our teams support causes that matter locally and internationally.

These initiatives have resulted in significant financial contributions, thousands of volunteer hours, and support for hundreds of charitable organisations—demonstrating the collective impact of our global workforce.

Our Foundation

Fairmead supports charitable and community-focused initiatives through an independent corporate foundation established to extend the social impact of our business and our people. The foundation focuses on communities most affected by climate change and environmental stress, particularly those exposed to extreme heat, drought, and food insecurity.

Governed independently and funded by the business and employee contributions, the foundation partners with trusted organisations to deliver practical solutions that help communities prepare for, adapt to, and recover from climate-related challenges
